About Licking Memorial Health
About a dozen or more ladies in Newark realized the city needed a hospital in the late 1890s. They had a little trouble seeing because these women had neither money nor property. Soon, nine beds as well as food, blankets, and other necessities were provided. Residents of Newark contributed between 50 cents and $50 per person. The Newark Hospital Association was formed as a non-profit corporation on December 20, 1898. In a nine-room home at 154 North Third Street, the Association established the first hospital in the neighborhood.
